In April 1994, extremist Hutu militias began the systematic murder of Rwanda's Tutsi population. Within just 100 days, more than 1.000.000 people — Tutsi and moderate Hutu — were killed, while the international community looked away.

The roots of the genocide run deep into Belgian colonial rule: The colonizers transformed and perpetuated socio-economic distinctions into ethnoracial categories, laying the groundwork for decades of hatred.

Together with our three guests, we wish to dedicate this evening to exploring this important subject:

Judence Kayitesi was 11 years old when the genocide tore her world apart. Now an author, she will read from her book 'A Broken Life' and share her personal story.
